Transition Edge Sensors: Versatile detectors for a wide range of applications from THz astronomy to quantum optics
Abstract
Transition Edge Sensor (TES) is a bolometer based on a thin superconducting film. When the film is biased within its resistive transition, a temperature change caused by absorbed EM radiation is detected as a resistance change. Typically, TES detectors are biased with constant voltage and SQUIDs are used to read out current. Due to a broadband nature of bolometric response, TES can be designed for a wide range of wavelengths from THz to X-ray. In contrast to “clicking” photon detectors, TES devices are intrinsically capable of photon number resolution (PNR). High efficiency coupled with PNR capability makes optical and infrared TES detectors an attractive technology for applications in quantum optics.
