Sensitive detection of terahertz radiation
There is a range of technologies and sensors for detection of the terahertz radiation starting from room temperature operated Schottky diodes to cryogenic superconducting bolometers, and from the heterodyne mixing to bolometric detection. The best detectors now demonstrate a single-photon sensitivity with NEP approaching 10^{-21} W/Hz^{1/2}. I will overview the modern state of the technology and new materials utilized, with an emphasis on spectral detectors based on the excitation of the plasma waves [1]. These detectors have few advantages for future expansion: spectral sensitivity, low response time, ability to support heterodyne technology [2]. Examples of a few ultimate terahertz imaging systems are discussed.
