will hold a seminar in Russian Quantum Center:
«Quantum optics provides a high-precision toolbox to enter and to
control the quantum regime of the motion of massive mechanical objects.
This opens the door to a hitherto untested parameter regime of
macroscopic quantum physics. Due to the large available mass range (from
picograms in nanomechanical waveguides to kilograms in mirrors for
gravitational wave detection) it becomes possible to explore the
fascinating interface between quantum physics and gravity in table-top
quantum optics experiments.»
Markus Aspelmeyer is Professor of Physics at the University of Vienna
and current Speaker of the Vienna Centre of Quantum Science and
Technology (VCQ). He is an expert expert in the field of experimental
quantum science, in particular quantum optics and its applications to
the foundations of quantum physics. He obtained his PhD in Physics from
the LMU Munich in 2002 and is one of the pioneers in the field of
quantum optomechanics, which aims to use quantum optical control over
micromechanical devices to study their quantum behavior. He has
published more than 100 papers in scientific journals, among them 13
papers in Nature and Science. His scientific prizes and awards include
the Bessel Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation, the
Fresnel Prize of the European Physical Society and the Ignaz-Lieben
Prize of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He is a Fellow of the
American Physical Society, a Member of the Young Academy of the Austrian
Academy of Sciences and a Member of the European Academy of Sciences and
Arts.
